Dealing with Shitty Bosses

Welcome to the Shitty Boss show! If you read this title and immediately have someone’s picture pop into your head and cringed a little, congratulations! Because, you have experienced dealing with a shitty boss. In this episode, the T-Uncut Crew talks about the kinds of things people can do or say that make them a shitty boss and how you can deal with it. Nikki, Jolene, and Alyssa talk about it all from insensitive comments, the inability to be accountable, micro-managing, lack of competence and more!

Why are we talking about shitty bosses today? Because they are everywhere! If you have ever entered the professional world as an employee or a volunteer, there is a high possibility you have experienced working under a shitty boss. If you haven’t, consider yourself lucky! In today’s episode the Therapists Uncut tease out:

What Defines a Shitty Boss?

  • Insensitive or degrading comments
  • Passive aggressive communication or behaviors
  • Aggressive communication or behavior
  • Inability to be accountable for actions or poor decision making
  • Tendency to blame others
  • Inability to attribute credit where is it due
  • Possible questionable/unethical decisions or behaviors
  • Micro-managing
  • Hyper-controlling how tasks are completed
  • Low competence
  • Difficulty receiving constructive criticism
  • Lack of humility and vulnerability
  • Poor or minimal communication
  • Unclear expectations
  • Avoid tough conversations

How to Be a Great Boss

  • Be authentic
  • Be vulnerable
  • Be accountable for your decisions
  • Practice positive communication with your team
  • Be honest
  • Actively listen
  • Reflect on your own behaviors and work toward improving them
  • Lead by example

How to Manage your Work Environment when you have a Shitty Boss

  • Practice coping skills, grounding, and self-regulation skills to help manage your emotional responses at work (example: mindfulness, deep breathing, walking, distraction).
  • Set healthy boundaries. Decide what is okay with you and what is not okay with you at work.
  • Document. Document. Documents your communication, events, and verbal communication in writing via email to assist with maintaining real time documentation of events.
  • Assess how positive or even toxic the overall work environment is for you and decide how to move forward.

Alyssa is also a Child Welfare Services (CWS) social worker and supervisor alumni, previous child sexual abuse forensic interviewer, and owner and CEO of a group private practice in the small town of Oakdale, CA.
